Welcome to Tiny Terry’s Wacky World of Exploration and Chaos!
Let’s start with a little info on the studio and publisher. Snekflat the studio behind Tiny Terry's Turbo Trip has only developed one other game as far as I can see a Metroidvania titled Wuppo released way back in 2016. This time they have teamed up with publisher Super Rare Originals for a wacky new game. This is the 3rd Super Rare Original I've reviewed and from Grapple Dogs: Cosmic Canines and Completely Stretchy which have all been a truly fun and delightful experience so thanks to Super Rare Originals and Dead Good Media for the key.
Oddball Journey to Space
Okay back to Terry and his Turbo Trip. Terry is unfortunately not doing that well in school so his punishment was that he was not included on the family summer trip because he is in summer school classes. All Terry wants to do is launch himself into space. Something Terry and my 6-year-old have in common. Terry's uncle helps set him up with a summer job driving a taxi to make money so he can save up to his goal of driving to space.
The town mayor was sick of accidents happening in the town center so he made a road to space. Yea, none of that makes sense, but it inspires Terry to save up, upgrade his new car, and turbo boost his way using this highway to space.
Collecting Cash and Trash
Lets get into the gameplay. There are two main types of currency in the game. The first is Cash which you use to upgrade items like a baseball bat or wrench used to smash things or hats which you can buy to look stylish. One special hat gives you the opportunity to find hidden trash hidden around the map which is key in the late game.
The second is trash. Yes, trash. You use trash found around the work to be reworked into boosts for your taxi. While junk is scattered everywhere, the biggest hauls come from odd jobs for the community, marked by question marks on the map. These tasks range from stealing cars—where a carjacker’s son pays you from the sales—to helping a criminal find non-violent ways to commit crimes. You even have the school where Terry is supposed to take his summer classes and instead you play soccer or rather football with your friends. Completing jobs reveals buried garbage that yields the best results.
You also unlock a paraglider which is now a staple among open world games.
Vibrant Style and Fluid Animations
I love the game’s simplistic design. The characters stand out with their quirky appearances, featuring offset eyes or mouths, and their unique voices add personality. Even the names are memorable, with standouts like Trapkind, Juigtank, Steekweg, Fluitjoch, and Hersenbreek. It’s a missed opportunity if they haven’t created a Tiny Terry name generator. Terry’s animations—whether walking, running, chatting with NPCs, smashing garbage for cash, or collecting bugs—feel fluid and rewarding. The bouncing when speaking to someone or the animation of someone burning alive because they won’t admit they need sunblock are hilarious visual gags.
Everything has a delightful wonkiness to it. For example, the guardrails, or parking lines, and many buildings look like freehand doodles with no refinements, yet this consistent style ties the game together and enhances its charm.
Tunes as Quirky as the World
The sound design of just talking in the game is one of my favorite things ever. I love the blomps, glomps, blorps, and odd mouths sound effects used as the voices. By pressing B you can make Terry talk and do the same. Garbage exploding into cash, catching bugs or squishing them, and driving all around have so much character in the sounds used for each one.
The song that plays when you are driving around was so catchy my son and I were singing it together the whole day I played the game. It was infectious, take a listen!
Is Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip Worth the Ride to Space? (spoiler - YES it is)
With a wacky open world to explore and a goofy premise, Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip is a true trip full of wonky NPCs, all living in an oddball world where wearing a traffic cone as a hat is perfectly normal. The highlights are exploring the world, boosting around in your car, and talking to characters with awkward silences in dialogue that make it hilarious. All of this just to go to space. Is it even worth it? Well, you’ll need to play the game to find out!
Tiny Terry’s Turbo Trip is a must-play for 3D platformer fans looking to explore, goof off, and have a great laugh. It took me roughly 3 ½ hours to beat the main game, but with plenty of side quests to complete, HowLongToBeat claims it’s 6 ½ hours, making the $17.99 price point more than reasonable. It's available on Steam right now and coming to PlayStation and Switch on February 13th.
I’m excited to check out Snekflat’s previous title Wuppo, and the rest of the Super Rare Originals coming in 2025!
Great review! I've been obsessing over these sandbox-y indie games lately, I'm definitely adding this one to my list :)
